anne maree barry says hi

I started this blog in 2007. No one had heard of The Wire and I was making experimental films that a select few saw. My initial tagline for this blog was: 'I write concisely. always. I'm trying to improve this - however, sometimes few words work better'. Then I found Twitter. However, I still post here once a week, so feel free to comment or just to simply say hii.

Zoo Art Fair

I think its an unusual thing to say but I love London. I like its anonymity, its huge size, seeing people I will never see again, going places I may never find again, eating great £1 samosas, looking in horror as male friends devour bagels with colossal lumps of meat inside them, finding random bars that stay open until the early hours (legally) with people banging on a piano but it still is magically in tune. My first impression of Zoo Art Fair was the glamorous queue to get in at 4.30pm - a lot of black, designer shades, admiring glances. My ticket was waiting at the door but I just walked right in regardless and from there the magic kind of ended.

In 2003 I awkwardly stumbled around The Armory Show, the biggest highlight was trying to sneek a glance at Jay Jopling at The White Cube stall - I wasnt a buyer - I didnt belong. Four years later and I am being represented at the most youthful and apparently most quirky
of art fairs - Zoo. I should be happy right? No, I was disappointed. It was more commercial than I thought - I could count the amount of video works on my hands, nothing caught my complete attention - apart from a Bruce Nauman like clown sitting in a stall across from Riflemaker, breathing. I still don't know whether he was real or an imaginary sculpture - perhaps this was the highlight. I treated myself to some champagne and chatted to the people that run Colony - who were representing my work.

After two and a half hours at the Fair, I left and went to a private view at Sadie Coles and then to various after-parties. Having had my art-fill I made the trek south on the 35 bus to Camberwell. At the bus stop the police had cornered off a section of the pavement by Camberwell Green. Three pieces of what seemed like white rags were in the centre, covered in
blood. On closer inspection the pavement was covered in it. I'll never know what happened (unless I search for it). This image had the most impact of the day - perhaps because, it was real.
