Thursday, February 12, 2009 @ 9:53 AMBoy 8 Bit
Tomorrow night Mad Decent's Boy 8-Bit will be playing with Nic James at the Twisted Pepper. If you've been anywhere near the internet in last couple of years you will have heard some of his many remixes or even seen him playing guitar for the Black Ghosts. The music kicks off at 11 and I have some space on the guest list if you want to email or text me. Also on the night will be Reach in the Basement and Alphabet set in the Mezz. For more information have a look here. I also found the gem below on You Tube. Diplo gets hit by a toilet roll at 1min 29, whilst Boy 8 Bit throws an inflatable crocodile into the crowd before the 'roll' incident. ouch. I would have liked to have met Mike Skinner last night and have chatted to him about John Gray's Straw Dogs, the book I am reading at the moment. However, it was not meant to be (interview here from o.m.m.). Instead I got the footage below at the gig at the Olympia.Mike Skinner was already barefoot, a random girl had to be taken off the stage, he took off his top and climbed on the amp.....what followed made a dull January much better. Monday, December 1, 2008 @ 5:19 AMbeardyman
I missed Beardyman at Twisted Pepper on Friday, due to other commitments. I heard he was crazy - beatboxing/mixing gabba and various other genres plus adding in some Venga Boys toddler songs. This is only a skill that I can aspire to. Below is a clip of Beardyman on Lily Allen and Friends. I like her interview technique - I don't know why she was getting so much slack from the press and critics. Labels: Beardyman, Bodytonic, Gigs-Dublin, Lily Allen, Stuff I like, Twisted Pepper |

Thursday, September 4, 2008 @ 2:24 PMElectric Picnic Round up (b) Diplo
Word from Diplo is that Major Lazer will be happening again next year. I had met him last October after he dj-ed at the Guinness Storehouse, however, on this occasion we spoke more. 'Keep making those videos' was the last thing he said to me - I am suitably inspired. Below a pic of me and him desaturated (we were both quite sweaty and it was the last day of the festival) and a video of balloons that fell from the heavens during his killer set. 99 red balloons... Friday, August 22, 2008 @ 1:30 PMeye malfunction
Blk Jks were quite interesting the other night. Their sound was an amalgamation of different genres rolled into one. It actually was quite rock(ish). Not a big crowd there but entertaining none the less. I had an eye-malfunction - where my sight resembled a scene from a nameless film, where the protagonist is wildly drunk/hallucinating and his point of view is out of focus. I was wearing a wink for most of the night, however, I doubt anyone noticed. Labels: Anne Maree Barry, Blk Jks, Choicecuts, Gigs-Dublin, Whelans |

I am looking forward to this gig next Wednesday August 19th, courtesy of Foggy Notions and the impressionable Choice Cuts team. Diplo has already signed them to Mad Decent. Their 'dub-fuelled psychedelic Afro-blues' should provide a welcome escapism from the dreadful Irish Summer weather. Tuesday, May 20, 2008 @ 2:28 PMGhislain Poirier
Labelled as 'global ghetto tech' Ghislain Poirier djs at Kaboogie, Traffic, this Friday. I included his remix of Brooklyn Anthem - Team Shadetek - on my Missognus Mix. The Montreal-based producer's blend of ragga, hip-hop and grime beats are quite infectious - if this gig is as good as Buraka Som Sistema (Crawdaddy, Oct Bank Holiday Weekend 2007) then I better wear my trainers. @ 1:07 PMAbsence makes the heart grow
My absence on this blog has been due to a number of elements - some meets, contemplative moods, a 16mm film course, live music and social behavior. This was a necessity as there are only so many clips one can watch on You Tube for inspiration. ![]() Jamie Lidell @ The Academy, Dublin Jamie Lidell at The Academy (May 3rd) was a disappointment. He came out on stage and burst into song - without taking a breath he sang two more. His voice does sound great live but I felt uncomfortable - it was obvious that he was going through the hundrum routine of another gig. The best part was when a member of his backing band started messing with a vocoder (it was so ridiculous that I laughed out loud) - and Lidell went back to what he knows best - using effects and samples. At the latter half of the gig he repeated the 3 songs he sang at the start but with a different rhythm. This is something you can have perhaps at a dancehall show but maybe not at this kind of gig - especially when I had actually paid for my ticket. The main thing I'll take from this gig is that there is only one person that can get away with wearing silk-pjama-like trousers on stage, and that's Jamie Lidell. Ghostface Killah was at the Tivoli, May 15th. The first forty minutes were kind of great, however it abruptly transformed into a pantomime. Girls from the crowd were asked to go on stage to dance around to a track about pussy. It subsequently got worse with a battle between Dub-a-lin wannabe rappers - which was embarrassing. No encore, just the guys that MC with Ghostface selling t-shirts and CDs - shouldn't that happen in the venue - not from the stage? After all these disappointments, I went to Ladytron last Friday (May 16th) at Tripod with no expectations. They revived my interest in live music - making visual cinematic landscapes with their sound. If they are at The Electric Picnic this year I will definitely go and see them. Nothing beats women that rock. Labels: Anne Maree Barry, Choicecuts, Dublin, Ghostface Killah, Gigs-Dublin, Jamie Lidell, Jim, Ladytron, music, music influence, Tivoli, Tripod |

Wednesday, April 30, 2008 @ 1:49 PMMultiple Fictions
Jamie Lidell will be performing his new album Jim at The Academy, Dublin, this Saturday. Lidell is known for layering tracks made with his voice into a microphone, performing the percussion and melody as a sequenced one man band. Over these pre-recorded voices, he sings soul-inspired songs. Taking things further than Multiply, Lidell appears to have found the balance between the spontaneous creativity of his raw ideas and how to carefully craft a popular work of art. The result is quite a polished record, one which makes Lidell, marketable. Below, a recent interview with Pitchfork where he discusses why he is making pop, new single Little Bit of Feel Good (2008) and the sultry Daddy's Car (2000) which is a finer example of how raw his creativity can be.
